USS Constitution Museum
The USS Constitution Museum serves as the memory and educational voice of USS Constitution, by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the stories of “Old Ironsides” and the people associated with her. The Museum provides a hands-on, minds-on environment where inter-generational groups seeking an enjoyable, educational experience can have fun and learn as they explore history together.
The old USS Constitution Museum website was powered by a proprietary CMS, and was hard to manage. The site also faced many front-end issues such as content being fragmented across three web platforms, multiple domains, and a lack of mobile-friendly and SEO-friendly design. Working closely with the Museum’s Media Management department, we set out to bring a modern and scalable web presence to the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world.
All content, resources, and blog posts were migrated from across three separate platforms into a WordPress Multisite environment. All content was also made SEO-friendly and easy to manage via a drag-and-drop visual editor.
To help fund the preservation of “Old Ironsides” for future generations, Press Foundry integrated an online recurring donation platform on the Museum’s new website. Leveraging the power of Gravity Forms, content managers are able to track donations and add levels for special events.
Press Foundry also migrated over 150 blog posts from two separate platforms and domains into a unified WordPress Multisite environment. Comments and media were also transferred, along with RSS subscribers.
The Collections & History area is a crucial piece of the site which includes a wide range of artifacts and records that span the Constitution‘s 200+ year history. Categories were carefully transferred to the new site, and adjusted to be fully responsive across different device sizes.
As the events calendar was a frequently-accessed portion of the old website, we ported their event data, and built upon it, using a WordPress-based calendar system. The calendar is also responsive, allowing users to easily see upcoming events while on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
The new USS Constitution Museum website is fully responsive in all areas, including blog posts, events, historical catalogs, donation pages, and more. This is set to increase the on-site retention rate, and provides an amazing user experience no matter what device the site is accessed from.
To support the high volume of traffic to the site, as well as the need for top-notch security and backups, the USS Constitution Museum chose WP Engine as their new managed hosting provider for WordPress, and the results have been amazing.
"Collin and his team were great to work with. They really took the time to understand the intricacies of our project. From the initial meeting to project launch and beyond, the communication and production process has been excellent. The Museum now has a refreshed web presence and a WordPress management system in place that will allow us to push our brand and mission forward."
