Press Foundry December 5, 20155:32 pm

Also includes scaffolding of REST API

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:32 pm

NY Times is already using it

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:33 pm

REST API is an alternative to XML-RPC to speak JSON with other websites

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:33 pm

New default theme Twenty Sixteen comes with 4.4, and is mobile-first. Responsive Images are also coming thanks to a solid group of people!

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:34 pm

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:35 pm

When WordPress adopts modern technology, the rest of the web follows

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:38 pm

205 accessibility tickets have been completed this year, an 80% increase from last year

Microsoft has been using Open Source more, including with their Dynamics AX offering

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:44 pm

The StoryCorps website and app use the REST API to connect data, and was powerful enough to withstand a link from the Google homepage during Thanksgiving!

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:45 pm

WordPress has gone from a blogging platform, to a CMS, to now a growing app platform

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:47 pm

Last Monday, Automattic released a project called Calypso – “what would it look like if the recreated the WP Admin from scratch?”

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:47 pm

Calypso is fully responsive, which is also a roadmap for their iOS and Android apps. It’s also a universal dashboard for all your sites

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:49 pm

Calypso is available for a Mac App download with over 50k downloads, Windows and Linux coming soon

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:50 pm

Calypso is a version 1.0. It’s just the basics, but it will grow over time

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:51 pm

Calypso, with a cache, is 14x faster than WP Admin

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:51 pm

“APIs are the key to an open web” – Matt

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:53 pm

When WordPress launched, the biggest criticism was that there were already too many blogging systems

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:57 pm

The LetsEncrypt SSL project is coming to WordPress – meaning free SSL certificates for all sites

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:58 pm

PHP7 also came out this week – much of the success of WordPress is dependent on the technologies it’s built on

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:58 pm

PHP7 can be twice as fast in many instances

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:59 pm

It’s code-compatible and twice as fast

Press Foundry December 5, 20155:59 pm

WP is going to work on getting the top plugin and themes available in every language over the next year

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:03 pm

Customization is the biggest opportunity for improving the WP new user experience

The final announcement is that WordCamp US 2016 is here in Philly again – December 2-4 2016

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:07 pm

Matt opening it up to the Q&A session now

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:09 pm

Matt will be meeting with the WooThemes leadership team to create a roadmap for the future

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:12 pm

Both WP Admin MP6 and Calypso can co-exist and co-evolve

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:14 pm

Looking to future, WP Dashboard could be more user-centric, and less site-centric, including managing multiple sites at once

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:19 pm

An attendee has asked Matt to call on everyone to push for making all sites accessible, which has been a large theme in this year’s WordCamp

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:21 pm

Accessibility isn’t just about those with disabilities, but also for those in regions with poor connectivity, language barriers and lack of translations, etc.

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:24 pm

Many companies built on WordPress are distributed, inclusive, and progressive, much like WordPress itself

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:32 pm

Hoping for more of WP Core using Git in the future!

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:34 pm

~9,200+ people said they use WordPress to make their living in this year’s survey – that includes the Press Foundry team!

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:37 pm

Matt on freemium plugins and themes – they’re gotchas that drive you to a paid version. Paid plugins in the directory could help developers in the short term, but could be corrosive in the long term

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:38 pm

People building things to be open and free for the world is what WordPress is built on, so not likely there will be a premium marketplace on WordPress.org

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:41 pm

Changing the minimum PHP version for WP would leave a lot of people behind. Web hosts are mostly driving PHP versions, not users. WP is reaching out to hosts to increase those to more modern versions

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:41 pm

If the ability to protect sites is there, even older versions, it happens

Press Foundry December 5, 20156:44 pm

That concludes the 2015 State of the Word Speech! Thanks to everyone who followed along, and happy Pressing!

Love,
The Press Foundry Team
